How to Recover a Failed Airtime or Data Purchase
Every day, thousands of Nigerians top up their phones for airtime or a fresh data bundle and pay without a hitch. But every so often, the payment goes through, the wallet debits, and nothing lands on the line. If that's happened to you, here's what's actually going on and how to fix it.
Why a top-up sometimes doesn't arrive
Airtime and data purchases usually fail for one of three reasons: a temporary outage on the network you're topping up (MTN, Glo, Airtel or 9mobile), a timeout between the payment provider and the network's own systems, or โ much less commonly โ a wrong or mistyped phone number. None of these mean your money is gone.
What happens to your money when a top-up fails
If a network is having issues, the transaction retries automatically behind the scenes. Most "failed" top-ups resolve themselves within a minute or two once the network stabilises. If a top-up still can't go through after retrying, the amount is returned to your wallet automatically โ you don't need to file a dispute or wait days for a reversal.
How KinaTrust handles a failed airtime or data purchase
When you buy airtime or buy data on KinaTrust, every transaction gets a unique reference the moment you pay. That reference is what our system โ and our support team, if you ever need them โ uses to track exactly what happened to your money, whether it landed on the line, retried, or was refunded to your wallet.
You can see the live status of any transaction from your Transactions history: pending, successful, or refunded. There's no guesswork.
What to do if a transaction still looks stuck
- Wait two to three minutes. Most retries resolve in this window, especially during high-traffic periods like the start of the month.
- Check your Transactions page. Look at the status next to the reference number โ if it says "refunded," the money is already back in your wallet.
- Confirm the number you topped up. A mistyped digit delivers airtime to someone else's line rather than failing the transaction โ double-check before retrying.
- Contact support with your reference number. If a transaction has been "pending" for more than 15 minutes, reach out with the reference so it can be traced immediately.
Avoiding failed top-ups going forward
A few habits cut failed transactions down to almost zero: double-check the phone number before confirming, avoid topping up during a network's planned maintenance window (rare, but it happens), and keep the app updated so you're always on the most reliable version of the purchase flow.
